Catch-Up is a literary zine with a thick ass comic section im in, based out of louisville.
the site says the issue is now available, how to get one im not entirely sure, there whole site is under construction, but i am told that it indeed does exist! i saw the pdf version a while ago and there are some amazing artists in there like Mark Hensel, Katie Skelly, Sam Gaskin, Josh Burggraf, Gil Gentile, Lane Milburn, Malachi Ward, and PB Kain amongst other.

Hope Mountain vol. 2 hit the streets this weekend! i have a bunch of copies, even more are floating around a few bars, coffee shops, and galleries in philly.

the idea is a post-apocalyptic comic book salesman crossing the wastedlands selling comics.

been keepin busy comic-ing a lot lately. got a whole bunch of stuff in the works. here is a small preview for a 2 pager thats going to be in an anthology (ill let you know the title when the formal press release comes out). one thing a lot of people are ignorant about is the fact that all of the worlds leaders, rulers, ceo's, and generally anyone is a great position of power are in fact reptilian and have been for thousands of years. our reptilian rulers have been running the show under our noses from the beginining of humanity. this particular comic is about 2 said reptilian leaders, and what they do behind closed doors. more info can be found on the reptilian agenda here and here

its a month into 2011 and what have i been doing??

sitting around mostly, but some art stuff too.

Next Friday ill be participating in the art show Refugee Reading Room organized by Amze Emmons at Space 1026.
this show will be highlight Amze's printing and paintings while have an installation of a post-utopian newsstand, on that newsstand you'll be able to pick up FREE copy of year three hundred million collected edition as well as secret prison 3.

also in early February i'll have a 2 page comic featured in the Latvian anthology kuš!
i'll be sure to post when it is available for purchase.

soon to be seen on the streets of Philly you can see an illustration of mine be featured in the upcoming free zine about the comedy and improv scene called Rube

In March ill be featured in a very exciting first friday show, i won't spill the beans, but it will be like nothing i've ever done before ever, meaning not comics, screenprints, abstract images, drawings, collage, or an installation (all of the mediums i've worked with in gallery shows). It will be at Mast Head studios.

I'll be in the newest issue of the Hive Anthology as well

Math Fiction 2 is in the works. some really cool people are involved.

i've also been thinking about some new and weird changes to the philly alternative comic con....more on that in a few months.

I'm going to be submitting to a bunch of different anthologies in the next month or so, i wont bother to drop all the names since its not a given i'll be featured in any of them.

i began writing out and planning my epic graphic novel which will be 2001: a space odyssey + kramer from seinfeld + characters from my previous comics + lots of abstract weird shit.

it's official i'll be going to TCAF in May! i'll be putzing around with Box Brown and Cyn Why.

So far i write reviews of dollar and 50 cent bin back issues (where have all the quarter bins gone??) and post vintage ads done in comic form. down the line i plan on writing better more rant like posts and recaps of art openings and comic cons. but for now you can read my reviews of Deaths Head2, Wacky Witch, and UFO Flying Saucers.

2010 Comics Year in Review

whatta year!
this year was filled with new art experiences and experiments. From web comics to gallery, lets just go chronologically shall we?
January
The year started out strong with me still working on my webcomic 'wastedlands' on a semi-regular updating schedule. i soon gave up on wastedlands by april though. during that month i was experimenting with doing abstract comics. i also got the sci-fi bug. i read the entire 2001 4-book series during this month as well as introduced myself to lots of moebius. this made me want to make a 'serious' comic aka one that isnt just filled monsters doing stupid jokes and gags but rather just monsters acting violent and action packed. i started working on the proposed 8 page comic 'C'Mon Man' i then gave up on it after 4 pages....
this later found a home at the magazine catch up whose website seems to be down right now.....

February was cold and snowy as shit.
my comic art along with other cool kids like webcomic luminary Jesse Moynihan and fantasy comic guru Pete Stathis at the green line cafe.
and i pretty much just stayed in and drew all month. working on finishing inhabitants.

March was my birthday and i turned 24! yay! im now in my mid-twenties. March was filled with planning and plotting...

the punk rock flea market 'christmas' edition was pushed back to here and it ended up being during a fucking BLIZZARD. me and jake alvarez did it anyways. a few hundred people showed but not like the few thousand that usually do....

April was awesome. Exhibited at MoCCA for the first time with comic-polish-friends Mike Turzanski and Pete Lazarski and i had my first over-night trip to NYC which they showed me some cool arty parties in the city. good times! that month was the official tabloid take-over for me. I helped put together philly's own free loid Secret Prison 1 as well as have my work shown in Smoke Signal 4 and Taffy Hips 7! that was a big accomplishment for me, to actually be featured in anthologies that have a high standard! plus they ALL premiered at MoCCA, which made me feel giddy.
april was also the month where i started my new comic experiment of 'abstracting' comics. the process was inspired by screenprint test sheets where you test out a full studios screens on one sheet or cloth and all the images pile up on each other creating there own unique image. these experiments will later be featured in art shows and their own book.the image above is actually an abstracted version of 'cmon man 2' which is the first image in this post

So april was great, mocca and tabloids and comic abstracting and i also FINALLY FINISHED INHABITANTS!

May was starting to get sunny!
I had my first try at Curating an art show in May! it was to go adjacent with the release of my comic Inhabitants which took nearly 2 years to finish! The opening was at Pterodactyl and it featured art by Lance Hansen, Box Brown, Hawk Krall, and Ian Harker. it was a fun art show and was a great learning experience in curating. Inhabitants first run was 67 copies which took about 3 months to sell out of.
by this time i was in full swing for organized the philly alternative comic con 2!

June started the philly hot-as-balls time
i had my first solo show at the last drop cafe with all my abstracted comics! of course i didnt promote it at all and no one came to the closing i had for it...but i did get to hang out with Lance Hansen and talk comic shit for a few hours. fun times!
also during the month of june i re-united with my good friend Adam Fergurson to work on a big time gallery installation show called mystic monsters. for about 4 weeks we worked everyday together, me trekking my ass out to west philly from south philly via bike and sweat and working on crazy art stuff.
this month also saw the release of Hive 4 by Grimalkin Press, another super great anthology with high standards i was apart of! great looking perfectbound book with a screenprinted dust jacket!
July was still hot as shit.
and completely packed with artsy shit to do!
well like i said before me and Adam worked for over a month on an art show called Mystic Monsters, a month long installation. i never did do a recap of the show, now being almost 6 months later heres a short one. this was the only time in the year where i did something artistic and NON-COMICS. it was also great to do collaborative work with adam. we literally sat on the floor of his room/studio and drew, glued, and painted out 8 foot long by 3 foot high collage dubbed the wisdom scroll. working in collage is great and i love to do it but never get around to it. also staying completely away from a narrative is hard for me to do, i found myself constantly writing things on the scroll trying to make some sort of sense of it all. of course it looks giant and non-sensical. i also tried my hand at mural arts and installation. the installation being me and adam created a BP oil spill re-enactment at Pterodactyl using old vhs tapes. i then drew a bunch of oily and dead fish floating around the corner of the gallery it was in. for all the literal man-hours and work put into the show i was terrible about documenting it. i dont have any good shots of the actual exhibit and it was pretty much impossible to get any good quality images of the wisdom scroll since it was on a giant, glarey image and glossy magazine paper cut up everywhere wrinkly paper. but adam has some shots of the spill documented here

will also did a big triptych piece of that was super symmetrical and design-y that i have no images of....and we also did a big drawing on an 18 foot wall again no images.... oh and i also put up my whole found photo collection (a hobby of mine) and the abstracted comics and adam had a wall of his artwork too. adams mom actually made a blog post about it you can read here
july was also the month that Seduction of the Innocent was released (i think....maybe it was released earlier...)
anyways this was edited and released by Lance Hansen and features a ton of great well known and not so well known (like me) cartoonists!

another first for me this year in july was being the editor for an art magazine called Dirty, released by Pterodactyl. this was another great experience i had, i got together a bunch of my friends to make art just for this. and the whole product was so unbelievably great! it had thick glossy paper stock, bound by a sewing machine with different color thread per issue, full color, plus a fold out center listing classes for pterodactyl, i was supposed to teach a comic class there but not enough people signed up. oh well. i had Brad Haubrich do the cover and Steve Streisguth do that back, both having a few pages each of art they specifically did for this magazine. i also had comics pages with comics by James T. Arnold, Box Brown, Ian Harker, Beth Heinly, and me.
It was a free and distributed all throughout philadelphia at art galleries, bars, cafes, etc. etc. over 1000 were printed. you can read the whole thing for free online here

the punk rock flea market summer edition was during a fucking HURRICANE. literally. me and jake alvarez held it down though.

i also began my webcomic called Year: 300,000,000 at Ink Answer where you can read the whole thing here.

August was probably the sweatiest month of the year
the biggest event for me all year probably was the philly alternative comic con aka PACC aka pat aulisio comic con.
this was held in early august. it was a huge success in my favor as an artist, organizer, and financially it paid my rent for 3 months and paid off most of my summer bills! i dont want to go on and on about it, but it was awesome, you can read my original impressions here
Secret Prison 2 was released in August and it made secret prison 1 look like a minimum security correctional institute!
Benjamin Marra did the cover and colored comic in the middle and i got to do the back cover in color, as well as make a comic called black santa which some guy called me a racist for. Ian upped his game having international artist contribute and he was cracking his editorial whip at all the philly comics scene to make better comics.
after PACC was done i was working on some comics here and there and then decided to come out with a split book with ian for spx, giving us a 3 week deadline to make a 10 page color comic. this was the fastest i ever worked, granted the editorial decision on the book was to have one panel per page, it was still a lot faster then how i usually work. the idea of having a split book fizzled since somebody couldnt finish there comic and color it in time... segue to

September!
SPX! me and ian then both had 'beat em up' one panel per page square comics ready for the show! his was called Urban Fight and mine was called Bare Knuckle. we tried to make a 90's action sidescrolling video game feel for them. streets of rage, contra, ninja turtle games, was all stuff i was thinking of, and i was actually playing streets of rage on my vintage sega at the time too! i made 30 copies, sold out quickly and have yet to republish it or put the whole story on the web, why? well im just gonna use it for an anthology or something probably then maybe reprint for mocca....
spx was awesome again and me, ian, box, and lance all had good car ride comic talk. as well as rooming/tabling with cody pickrodt who has a shitload of crazy stories!

also for spx i collected all my abstract comics i made last january and the abstracted comics i made last april-june into a comic literally called 'abstracted comics' which recently got reviewed here

for the first time ever i had my comics appear in europe! at a show i was asked to submit comics to in Istanbul, Turkery. this was great exposure which led to a small surge of people from around europe to start following me on facebook and blogger. the idea of the show was 'anyone can make a zine' and they asked a ton of people from all around the world, mainly from europe and countries bordering turkey, but some americans like me and Eamon Espey.

as you can see they hung up a bunch of zines, comics, and art books all over the walls for anyone to read. you can see more about it on the organizers website here

i also started working on putting together a 3d comic in september.

October was still kinda weirdly hot.

i went to pittsburgh to table at the pittsburgh indy expo with box brown and ended up drinking and talking comics with Frank Santoro, Jim Rugg, Jason Lex, and Box which was awesome. also talked comic-organizer talk with the head of the show bill boichel. frank also interviewed me and box there and you can hear the audio here

i submitted a rejected cover of howard the duck for the covered blog and started up a facebook group for Yeah Dude Comics

i just worked on a bunch of things most the month, mainly on the 3d book math fiction

same thing for November
i just kept editing math fiction, which was an anthology with me, Ian Harker, Will Cardini, and Josh Burgraff.
the european art show paid off and i was invited by a different european group to take part in a travelling art show called the last match you can see here
i also cancelled Year 300 million and started my new webcomic called LAZY ORANGE CAT over at Ink Answer

and finally December, which is cold and snowy and shitty out.
i finished up MATH FICTION just in time to release and sell out at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest! the book was such a huge success for me! i also learned even more about editing, bookbinding, printing, published etc.
i had to use 3 different printers to make the book and i hand glued each page. as well as wrangled the artists and make my own comic and do the whole 3d process!! it was quite the job but well worth it! i think everyone (all 40 of them) who got a copy probably thinks its really fucking cool to own.

Secret Prison 3 was released as well! this one was super artsy and super elite. is Ian Harker trying to be the next big name editor in the comic industry??

and since then ive been working on stuff for a few anthologies, look out for me in 2011 in such titles as Math Fiction Squared, Secret Prison 4, the new issue of KuS!, the Hive anthology, Rube magazine!

and other stuff on my horizon is collaborative works with me as a writer with Box Brown, some cool art gallery shit, possibly a trip to baltimore, a heavy metal art book, more euro invasion stuff, PACC 3, the cancellation of Lazy Orange Cat and a brand new webcomic to take its place, a possible teaching gig, and just plain more comics in general. i also want to post more comic review type posts.

Black Santa and News

hey everyone!
lets start out with a stupid comic i made called black santa!
this was published in secret prison 2. the story behind this is that one the secret prisoners backed out at the very last minute before print, ian then asked me to just make up some stupid comic in 2 days before print.i already spent time working on the colored back cover of SP2, which was my main contribution but i figured id go for the gold and make a comic real fast too. as you may not know i am a very slow drawer, when it comes to tabloid sized stuff i usually draw them at 11x17 and it takes about 9-13 hours per page for me. these hours of course spread out throught a week or so. so i had to work super fast and took a different approach. so i tried to pull a 'paul pope' and just fucking crank it out with fast fluid brush strokes. did i succeed? no. but whatever it was still fun. i did this start to finish in 4 hours. very loose pencil, followed by quick expressive brush strokes with no turning back, no actual plot just the stupid idea of a black santa puking. its probably one of the stupidest ugliest comics ive made, but it was an experiment in comic making (at least thats the excuse im using). check it out below!

so this was just a 'eh whatever' comic to me. i wasnt expecting any type of recognition or notice, especially since it was surrounded by such great talent in SP2. but it did catch one persons eye in a bad way.... below is the email response i got:

Pat, my name is Zac and recently I stumbled across a zine which you contributed work to, "Secret Prison". Unfortunately, this is not an email from a fan who wants to compliment your cleverness; I have a real concern with your submission. I'm sure at some point in America, it would have been hilarious to draw a comic titled "Black Santa" with depictions of a slovenly, uneducated, drunk Black man. It belongs right next to WWII cartoons of Japanese men with huge teeth and thick glasses, or Jewish women with exaggerated features (in other words, it belongs in the garbage). The thing about stereotypes is that they only exist because they continue to be perpetuated by people who know (or need to know) that they aren't true. Showing a man dressed as Santa when the only thing defining him as "Black Santa" is that he is disgusting and Black, makes the two traits inseparable, and is extremely offensive. As a Black man, descended from a long line of educated, hard working Black men, I am greatly put off by sorry attempts at satire like this. I have had to put up with stereotypes my whole life, and negative images like the shit you put in that magazine makes convincing white people that I'm literate and honest a lot more difficult. Please think a little more about the deeper implications of the doodles you think are funny before you make them available for the entire world to see.

i mean CCCCOME ON!! it was a fucking joke dude. ugh! re-reading this makes me want to point out a million more things in my case for black santa. but at the time (this was written to me in october) i wrote back this (read it in a sarcastic voice):

Zac,
i love hearing from fans! thanks for taking your time to read my stuff, i hope you enjoyed the back cover i did more then my comic!
Anyways in reference to your words on black santa being drunk and disgusting, didn't have to do with him being black, and who said he was uneducated? he has 2 PhD's!
he fought lobster men in a very heroic action in the first panel, followed by him celebrating by drinking and throwing up, the joke is just because he is a hero doesn't mean he can chug booze fast. it's a puke joke not a stereotype joke but actually a satire of the inherent absurdity of stereotypes themselves; him being black had nothing to do with him drinking and puking. I'm sorry you didn't read it that way but when you release 2000 issues you are bound to find 1 reader that doesn't get the joke. I know the black guy i buy weed from loved it and i gave him copies for his friends which are now helping fund the third issue. It would be great if you would put a contribution to the funding of issue #3, were selling off artwork and comics by a variety of cartoonists, check the blog at www.secretprisoncomics.blogspot.com for updates on that!

anyways i never get any type of fan mail let alone hate mail. so it was really great to see i touched someone with my art, whether it be good or bad. if you read any of my books id love to hear your opinions! id love to get enough mail to start a 'letters column' like days or comic book yore.

whats new in my horizon? well i just lost my day job and am unemployed or as i like to call it a full time cartoonist. so in between looking for work to pay for christmas presents and bills and avoiding eviction i got my next line of comic projects comin up.

first im going to have 2 pages in the Latvian anthology KUS! which i started to draw already, its going to be a different approach, im drawing it entirely in colored pencil, kinda like the color pages of inhabitants. this wont drop until 2011 in february or so...ill keep you updated

secondly im helping put together a show at philly's coolest studio/gallery/hipster/screenprinting spot SPACE 1026. this also in february. ill keep my mouth shut as to what its going to be about and wait until the main curator whos running the show puts out his press release.

thirdly MATH FICTION SQUARED, the sequel to math fiction will feature more artists, more pages, more 3D, and more weirdness. im aiming for a MoCCA release in April.

fourthly my brother ian is in the very early fetus stages of coming up with an art-comic dudes themed manga. we talked about this on the car ride to and from brooklyn and basically its going to be all about book design and telling a 4 page story in 20 pages done by weirdo artists. if Math Fiction is like Heavy Metal this untitled Manga project will be like the thick newsprint digest sized manga (i dont read manga so i cant think of a title to compare it too)

and of course aside from all that i have my idea and very loose structure of my next book which i plan on making it a 5 issue 16-20 page mini comic series im gonna try to get published or a xeric grant graphic novel sometime in 2012. its going to be about Jon Bowman from 2001: a space odyssey, kramer from seinfeld, and my characters from inhabitants.

Brooklyn Comics Graphics Recap

ive never really done any recaps before, i always just trolled the internet looking for a mention in others peoples blogs...so here it is

me and my older brother ian got to brooklyn around 1030 and set up. from 11-12 it was only the artists and the public wasnt let in yet. i used this time to be super OCD and rearrange my books 10 times over and again. i later regretted that and should have used that time to buy cool comics before they sold out/the place was to crowded to get to.

it was the most success ive had a comic con aside from PACC (i only have success from PACC cuz its MY show though).
the place was completely crowded all day long, with tons of people with actual money buying stuff! it being a curated comic show i had another distinct feeling of 'fitting in' compared to shows like spx or mocca where i feel like a little fish in a big pond that no one notices. also there wasnt any real big down time at all, i spent ALLLL day talking to a million different people, some i knew, but a lot of people interested in what i do.

i of course went there with MATH FICTION, which everyone seemed really pumped about. a ton of people looked through it at the show, and 21 lucky people bought a copy and left home with it! i had no expectation at ALL to sell all 21 copies i had at the show, i totally thought 15 would be the maximum i would sell! i was kicking myself wishin i brought more copies since i sold out of them around 6 15, had ian go back to his car so we could sell his contributor copy, i then walked around and showed some people i knew would be interested, then sold the last copy to Zak Sally at like 645. this is what it looked like

well some cool philly dudes stop by including, Art Baxter, Bob Pistilli (who was hard-selling secret prison), Steve Teare (who drew on a bunch of the 3d glasses), Jason Clarke (who actually live in nyc now, but hes still a 'philly dude' to me), Dre time, and Tommy Rudmoose

i also saw and chatted with some comix friends of mine like Cody Pickrodt, Tom Smo, Sam Gaskin, Leon and Barry from Secret Acres, Chris Pitzer, Benjamin Marra, Matt Wiegle, Sally Bloodbath, Jim Rugg and Josh Burggraf

and then i also met some cool new people and people i only knew via the net like Anne Koyama, Zack Soto, Mykl Sivak, Tony Shenton, Aidan Koch, Michael Deforge and Jen Tong

and i then talked to like a million more people whose names i forget including a guy that actually lives in philly too that i never heard of that gave me a porn comic and also the guy that runs the Jack Kirby Museum who had a bunch of Kirby Blacklight Posters that looked so god damn trippy in 3d glasses my brain meleted out of my ears a little bit.

the quality of books released was SOOOOOO fucking high.

the highlights of my stash were:

i also wanted to get but didnt have the loot for the new issue of Taffy Hips, Closed Caption Comics 9, the new Study Group anthology issue, and Crickets 3 (pbox and desert island were on the front stage that was completely packed the whole time, so i didnt even get to check out what they had...)

it was a long grueling day and we didnt leave until about 845. but i think MATH FICTION went over well and all the responses were great. so many people read my little sign about it being in 3d and were confused, then to put on glasses and open up the book and be amazed and be like "WOW!"

this was also the first show i ever had where there was a crowd and at one point a small line of people at my table, waiting to check out the 3D. it was very ego-satisfying.

all in all it was a great show and had a great time and hopefully made a great impression with MATH FICTION

oh and also Secret Prison 3 was released too which is soooo good! best issue to date. SP is hopefully now in a groove of each issue being exponentially better then the last.

what is Math Fiction you ask?

well it's kinda like if GOD was just a bunch of numbers the size of a galaxy floating around the universe and created worlds where barbarians roam the wastedlands with mind reading powers that let them see in 6 different dimensions at once, all this is happening while in space entire races of beings,that eat quantum physics for breakfast, walk around doing uni-mind tasks that take billions of light-years to do just for fun. it of course can only be viewed in 3D.
its like Heavy Metal if it were still cool and drawn by me and my friends.

also debuting at my table is SECRET PRISON 3! another great issue with mind blowing artists of course.

the last match art show

so ive been in contact with some awesome Latvian cartoonists that put together the baltic comic magazine formerly known as Kusi! (now its just an S with a dot above it, however your pronounce that...)
anyways they asked me to be apart of there traveling art show exhibition known as 'the last match' where they sent me a very SMALL piece of paper to draw on, which will then be exhibited all around europe. the show is growing all the time and seemingly will go on forever, its been happening for about a year now and they have over 200 artists already. looking through the different artists on there flickr page there are about 10 or even less of the 200+ that are from the USA, so i'm really proud to be apart of this european art show representing the states. you can see the flickr page here and the blog about the show here

so i scanned in a bunch of old stuff today including the LONG LONG LONG out of print "Creatures Saying Foul Things" i made as a project for my illustration class sophomore year in college. i had access to free copying back then and i made a ton and handed these fuckers out around school, and when i presented it for critique my teacher had everyone in the class read a different page, it was great seeing the total straight-laced jamaican kid say 'banana republic isnt just for vampires anymore' and i remember a girl in my class refused to say 'the anal laundry should be ready'. good times! so 'like' yeah dude comics on facebook and you can read this old school zine, along with the out of print untitled freebie (cover shown below), in their raw scan form!

right now im working on an epic comic anthology, the sheer scope of it is hush-hush for now, but here is some previews for you.

surprisingly this is the 3rd draft of the script, which is more or less the 'final draft', i do usually change some parts when i actually start penciling it, but this is how i usually work... extremely loose and sloppy.

this is cover desigin part-way done. the borders are all cut off cuz the page is top big for my scanner, but you get the point.

BEST FIND EVER

So i'm lucky enough to live by 2 awesome stores that sell old cheap comics across the street from each other, mostly books and philly aids thrift. they both get 'new' boxes of donated comics seemingly at least once a month. earlier in the month i was shockingly surprised to see someone donated a large collection of 70-80s marvel comics, i got some original jack kirby monster comics, a near complete run of howard the duck, and the daredevil comics that frank miller did when he introduced elektra and all the ninja stuff, all for about 3-4$ each which i thought was the ultimate find (ive been reading howard the duck all month long). but yesterday i was digging through the 50 cent bin at mostly books and my first awesome find was an issue of bone #7, only 50 cents! if that wasnt cool enough i found the best most obscurely awesome comic ever, MICHAEL JACKSON AS CAPTAIN EO IN 3D!!!
AND IT CAME WITH 2 PAIRS OF GLASSES UNOPENED!!!!! FOR 50 CENTS!!!

i must say, i remember owning a ninja turtles comic in 3d when i was a kid so i havent experienced original blue/red 3d in a long time, and i am blown away! its actually really fucking awesome looking. it basically makes it look like you can see the different planes of vision with space between the characters and the background. why dont they still make comics like these???

so whats it about? well on the cover it says its based after a movie that GEORGE LUCAS and FRANCIS COPPOLA MADE! what? how come i never heard of this? well it apparently was only released in disneyland, disneyworld, and the epcot center. upon some googling i found out it played from 86-90 and it actually got re-released this year! the story is so simple stupid. we start off being introduced to the 'rag tag band' in the middle of a space dog fight, its michael as captain eo and a few furry creatures (one named hooter whos ongoing joke is he eats everything) and a robot too (that later turns into a drum set)
their mission is to give a gift to a supreme leader of some unnamed planet. they end up crash landing on the supreme leaders planet by accident and get arrested. upon being arrested for trespassing michael tells the leader (a very clive barker looking monster girl) he has a present for her, which is of course a song and dance. she gets mad and tells her guards to kill them so while dancing michael apparently can shoot lightning from his hands and kills all the guards. he then goes on to kill the supreme leader, all while singing his song with the verse 'we are here to change the world!'.
it ends with some woman, who we dont know who she is, that just appears after the leader dies and smiles. the end.
so basically he goes to a planet, kills the leader, and replaces her with a new leader that isnt a hideous monster. sounds very american.

my head was to big for the cardboard frame so i had to tape them to my glasses to get the full effect

this is one of the funny parts, captain eo is being called by his superior, being nagged that hes late so hooter throws a big melon at the screen and michael does his patented 'hoo hoo!' COMIC GOLD!

this is apart of the dog fight in the beginning where the outrun the ship chasing them and make it crash and get destroyed killing all of its passengers, then michael screams 'woa!'

and this is the end, the first panel is the supreme leader monster being vaporized followed by the inexplicable woman appearing to end the comic.

its actually wonderfully drawn in realistic way, and 3d shots of all the space craft is my favorite part, all the ship parts are detailed and it looks like it goes back in space. its drawn by Tom Yeates.

the first image is a 'how to' of making a 8 page square comic from a 11x17 i emailed to ian while we were talking about the book were putting out together for SPX. i figured id post it on the internet cuz i spent 10 minutes making it.

another NEW BOOK ill have is Abstracted Comics, a 10 page full color book of all my abstracted comics you may have seen this past summer hanging at pterodactyl, last drop cafe, and currently at 1601 (10th/tasker, philly bitches)

this is a few page very early preview of what im working on with ian, a square, one panel per page, comic based after 'beat em up' games of yesteryear like bad dudes, double dragon, streets of rage etc. this is going to be 10 pages, full color, and when you flip the book youll get a ian harker comic of the same mythos, also 10 pages, i think, maybe more.

this is going to be 4 color, screen print-style, so much more detail will be added!

BUT WAIT! THERES MORE!

I will also have extra copies of the PACC anthology, SECRET PRISON 2, INK ANSWER #1, Inhabitants, my usual Pat makes drawings 2, untitled blue book, and boot legs.

BUT WAIT AGAIN! PACC Aftermath

so i figure i might as well do a post about PACC, since, ya know, its my baby project.

this year exceeded my expectations so far. last year was a success but still had a lot of slow moments, this year i was literally running around the whole damn time like a mad man, and when i had a chance to sit i was actually selling comics! who'da thunk it?

it was great to have a 'big' small press publisher like secret acres get a table, but it was even better the fact that they came super early and helped me set up the tables. i wasnt sure if they were kinda shocked that it was super DIY having the star exhibitors set up the tables but by the end of the day when they were rolling in sweet comic cash it didnt seem to matter.

i was surprised at the huge amount of foot traffic we had, all day long, there wasnt 5 minutes gone by where nobody was coming through the door. last year the first hour and a half only like 2 people showed up, this year we had people comin in before all the exhibitors were even set up! my future-goal was to have people travel to come see pacc, ya know, a few years down the line when i get big enough names, but i reached that goal this year! i had a family (literally husband wife and kids) come by and tell me they drove from virginia for the day just to check it out! i was stunned! oh and kids, like literally, there were kids at this thing! hah! i dunno, i guess the whole stereotype is comics are for kids, but when you make books like mine and you hang out with cartoonists like the philly comix jam scene the last thing you think of is kids+comics.

of course being philadelphia, and the rotunda's lack of AC, it was a sweaty day which i think helped with the DIY atmosphere. im sure other, more heat sensitive people, would say otherwise though.

Secret Prison 2 took the con by storm as well as Dirty, 2 projects which im heavily apart of, and both are free. so i was super pumped about that, since i had no real 'new' book. i guess this was the debut of inhabitants at a comic con though.

im not sure the head count but im estimating in the 500's of attendees, one of which includes local legend (and PACC alumni) Charles Burns

it was a fun all day success, which was supposed to end at 6 but the room was so packed no one really left til 630.

i also learned some more about organizing shows and have a boatload of awesome ideas for next year to make it much bigger and better!

overall it was totally worth the 4 months of work. it paid all my summer bills! yay! no more debt (lies)!

its also really weird to be like a person-to-know type of deal, getting a lot of publicity and random emails from people. but now that its over ill have to wait til next summer before people start giving a shit who i am. it is definatley the type of thing i wonder constantly 'well these people know who i am now, but do they read my comics? appreciate my art? or are they just trying to network with a organizer of a comic con?' OH SELF DOUBT! i did sell out of my small stack of inhabitants early in the day and was kicking myself for not bringing more.

TERRIBLE REVIEWS

so i used to work at this vegan friendly pizza place called gianna's for 3 years here in philly. bored, looking through yelp.com i found a bunch of reviews, specifically targeting me and about how much of a rude dick i am, here are some highlights!

....The customer service was terrible too, the guy working was so unfriendly and kinda rude. Won't be coming back!

I have been eating here on and off for the past five years. Gianna's offers tasty food and terrible service. The restroom looks like a stadium bathroom after a triple overtime Eagles loss to the Cowboys.
If my rating was based solely on the food, I would give Gianna's four stars because their vegan food is usually pretty good and they come up with interesting combinations for pizza toppings. The vegan tomato pie with vegan beef and garlic is fantastic. That being said, it's hard to overlook the fact that you are normally treated like a hindrance instead of a customer. The restaurant could also use a thorough visit by Mr. Clean.

It's a dump inside like most pizza places, and the people that work there are so rude, it was a big turn off. I'll just be getting delivery from there now on and not dealing with the clowns that work in there at the register from now on.

2 friends from out of town wanted to go here because they saw the place on a food TV show. We showed up and were shocked at what a dump the joint is. Filthy, rag tag dilapidated chairs. And worse yet, the staff was just a bunch of bitchy hipsters. Seriously, they made us feel SO unwelcome that we left and went somewhere else. I would never go back to this place.

They are rude beyond belief. Oh I'm sorry to be so bothersome while I give you my money.

First off, I would have given this place a 2 or a 3 but they get 1 star for their rude, unhelpful staff (sorry, were we not hipster enough for you?) and fairly dirty interior. Seriously, would it kill them to clean? I'm surprised the health department hasn't been by recently. Trust me, I'm no stranger to divey places that are rough around the edges, but this place needed a serious cleaning.

First I see a highly patronizing, crabby sign that says something to the degree of, figure out if you are a vegetarian or a meateater and order accordingly. And no, you can't return your sandwich if it's wrong. I don't understand how there are love notes to this place in loopy handwriting next to this sign.

Then, the conversation with the went like this with the underage cashier:
Me: what kind of cheese do you have?
Him: mozarella, cheddar, american, provolone, cheese whiz, vegan, etc.
Me: okay, I'll have cheddar on my gigi special (that's the vegetarian cheesesteak which btw, turned out sort of bland and I'm sure full of dye and chemicals.)
Him: oh, we're out of cheddar
Me: (thinking it was retarded of him to mention cheddar when they were out of it). Okay, American.
Him: fine. drink?
Me: a water please
Him: oh we're out of waters too. Sorry!
Me: okay, a Sprite I guess.

Then I proceeded to order a vegan peanut butter cupcake, but it slipped out of my hands and crashed onto the floor. Because of the earlier sign and the ditziness of the cashier I didn't go back to get another, or even have the balls to ask for a free one - explaining my clumsiness.

I find the staff, while never quite rude, definitely not friendly and don't seem to give a damn that someone is a paying customer. It's definitely not a matter of "getting what you give," as I'm never rude, sometimes overly considerate and apologetic if I'm taking more than a few seconds. I just think it's their personalities.

Hive issue 4

i just got the new issue of hive, a somewhat quarterly anthology and it is AWESOME. i thought it was going to be a mini-comic xerox type zine, dont get me wrong i love xerox zines, i make them all the time, but i was pleasantly surprise to see it as a full length 100+ page perfect-bound book with a heavy-stock paper 2 color screen printed jacket! im super stoked to have some work in here, which i contributed a 3-page excerpt from inhabitants. the highlights of the book include work by Noah Van Sciver, Hurk, Iain Laurie, and Malachi Ward. hey there!

this april i begin teaching classes at the creative art space pterodactyl in north philly! the class description is as follows

- MAKING COMICS FROM IDEA TO PRINT
Wednesdays 6:00-8:00pm Teacher: Pat Aulisio
In this course students will learn how to write, draw, and self publish their own mini comic. Students will create their own characters and story to illustrate in different dynamic comic book techniques . At the end of the course all comics will be collected into a class anthology. Aside from the basics writing and drawing skills for comics there will be daily drawings games to pique the interests of the students like comic jams, drawing from a written description, and parody comics. Guest comic creators will make appearances talking about individual techniques and comic skills. Students will also learn various comic book formats that will fit to each students personal choice, as well as different folding and bookmaking techniques for their final product.

PART I:
4 Weeks Apr 14 - May 5 Tuition: $90 + $10 materials fee

In the first 4 weeks of the class, students will learn the basics of writing and character design, and begin the page and panel layouts that will become their final drawings.

Students will need to bring bristol paper pencils, erasers, pens, brushes, ink and rulers.

PART I I:
4 Weeks May 12 - Jun 2 Tuition: $90 + $20 materials fee

The second half of the class will guide students in the drawing process. In the second 4 weeks, students will lay out their book structure and learn examples of dynamic poses and panels. There will be demos inscanning and formatting in Photoshop, in laying out pages for print and Xerox machine use as well as different book making and folding techniques.

Students will need to bring bristol paper pencils, erasers, pens, brushes, ink and rulers. It is preferred that students have access to Photoshop outside of the class.

Students are welcome to join in on the second 4 weeks without enrolling in Part I if they already have a story written out.

Pat Aulisio has been reading comics since he learned how to read and has continually been making mini comics since age 14. He has a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts. His comics have been in various anthologies by Young American Comics, Fanatic Press, and Always Comix publishers among others. He is a member of the Philly Comix Jam (phillycomixjam.com) and The Autumn Society (autumnsociety.blogspot.com) and his comics and arthave been featured in shows at the Saint March Gallery and Brave New Worlds Comic Store. Pat is currently organizing the first ever Philadelphia Alternative Comic Con (PACC).

heres a small spot illustration i did for 'the indypendent' a free newspaper in new york. this was the first time since i finished college that i really had to do a standard illustration like that, the art director literally told me to draw a flower child hugging a nuclear plant, the flowers coming out were my 2 cents. took me no time at all to draw really, it was a fun little exercise. its for a book review the book Whole Earth Discipline: an Ecopragmatist Manifesto by Stewart Brand
